Reading
Reading at Oaklands School
At Oaklands School we aim for all our students to become fluent, confident readers who are passionate about reading.
Children who read regularly or are read to regularly have the opportunity to open the doors to so many different worlds!
More importantly, reading will give your child the tools to become independent life-long learners.
We can achieve this together through:
- Read Write Inc, a program to help to your child read at school
- Encouraging children to develop a love of books by reading to them daily, at home and at school
- Giving children access to a wide range of books at school and at home
Oaklands School Library
The school library provides an extensive range and choice of accelerated reader books for all abilities as well as access to a wide range of books, which can increase knowledge and insight. When students complete a comprehension quiz after they have read a book they put a quiz slip into a box and get the chance to win a £5 voucher. We have access to the local Education Resource Library service which provides books and resources to support across the curriculum. Students have more opportunities to read a variety of books of their choice. We order books that they have a particular interest in.
Oaklands Reading vending machine
This NEW and exciting reading incentive has been a huge success. Every time a student has read at least 3 times at home in a week, this will be recorded. Once a student has reached our school’s reading at home target, they will be given a golden token which can be used at our school’s vending machine where students will be rewarded with a book of their choice. They can also earn tokens for showing and sharing their love for reading in other ways.
