Citizenship

Team

In Key Stage 3 the citizenship team consists of one full time teacher plus specialist support staff in each session.

Achievement and Progress

At Oaklands, citizenship is delivered at Key Stage 3 where each group receives one 35 minute session each week. Every pupil in citizenship is assessed through continual teacher analysis. This gives opportunities for additional support or extension activities where appropriate.

Curriculum Overview

The Year 7 Citizenship curriculum aims to help students understand what it means to be an active, informed, and responsible citizen. Students will explore their own identities, how communities evolve over time, and how laws, rules, and safety help protect individuals and society. Through discussion, reflection, and real-world examples, learners will develop respect, empathy, and confidence in contributing positively to their communities.

Secondly, in Year 8, the curriculum develops students’ understanding of democracy, law, media, and active citizenship. Students will explore how the UK political system works, how laws are made and changed, the influence of media, and how individuals and groups can bring about change locally, nationally, and globally. The curriculum encourages critical thinking, informed debate, and responsible participation in society.

Furthermore, in Year 9; Citizenship deepens our students’ understanding of governance, equality, the economy, and active participation in democracy. Students will explore how the UK is governed, whether society is fair, how money and the economy function, and why people migrate. The curriculum empowers young people to develop financial capability, global awareness, and confidence in their role as active citizens.
