Accessibility Statement
Our Commitment
Oaklands School is committed to making this website as accessible as possible for all users, including those with disabilities.
We aim to make this website accessible so that you should be able to:
- Change colours, contrast levels, and fonts using your browser or device settings
- Zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- Navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
- Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
If you need help making your device easier to use, AbilityNet has advice for people with disabilities.
Accessibility Features
This website has been built with the following accessibility features:
- Responsive design: the website works across a range of devices and screen sizes
- Keyboard navigation: the website is navigable via keyboard for users who cannot use a mouse
- Text readability: we use clear fonts, sufficient colour contrast, and adjustable text sizes to enhance readability
- High visibility mode: available via the link at the bottom of each page
Compliance Status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 AA standard, due to the exemptions and non-compliances listed below.
School Exemption
This website benefits from a partial exemption under the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. Primary and secondary schools and nurseries are not required to meet full accessibility compliance across all website content.
However, this partial exemption does not apply to content that people need in order to use our services — for example, forms used to book breakfast club, after-school care, or to submit meal preferences. We are committed to ensuring that any content essential to accessing our services is fully accessible.
Known Accessibility Issues
We are aware of the following limitations on this website. Where issues fall within our control, we are actively working to address them. Where content is provided by third parties or falls outside the scope of the regulations, we cannot always guarantee full compliance.
Images:
We endeavour to include appropriate alternative text for all images. If any images are missing a text alternative so that screen reader users cannot access the information, we will rectify this if notified. This may fail WCAG 2.2 AA criterion 1.1.1.
PDFs and downloadable documents:
Most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software. We are working to update essential documents into accessible formats over time.
Video:
We endeavour to include frame titles, captions, and transcripts for videos where needed. If any videos are missing these, so that assistive technology users cannot access the content, we will rectify this if notified. This may fail WCAG 2.2 AA criterion 1.2.
Links:
We endeavour to ensure all links are descriptive and meaningful. If any links are not sufficiently descriptive for screen reader users, we will rectify this if notified. This may fail WCAG 2.2 AA criterion 2.4.4.
Colour contrast:
We aim for our brand colours to meet the required contrast ratio for text. If any text does not meet the minimum contrast threshold so that users with visual impairments are affected, we will rectify this if notified. This may fail WCAG 2.2 AA criterion 1.4.3.
Forms and interactive elements:
Some form elements or interactive features may not have labels or may be difficult to operate using a keyboard alone. We will address these if notified.
Embedded maps:
Embedded maps (such as Google Maps) may not be fully accessible within the site.
Third-Party Content
A significant portion of this website contains content and tools provided by, or hosted on, third-party platforms. Oaklands School does not control this content and cannot guarantee its accessibility. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Embedded videos hosted on external platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo
- Links to external websites and resources not owned or operated by the school
- Platforms and tools provided by third-party suppliers, including curriculum resources, school management systems, and external providers
We encourage third-party providers to meet accessibility standards, but we cannot be held responsible for the accessibility of content or services outside our direct control. If you have difficulty accessing any third-party content linked from this site, please contact us and we will do our best to help.
Content Outside the Scope of the Regulations
The following content is not required to meet the accessibility regulations:
- PDFs and other documents published before 23 September 2018 that are not essential to providing our services
- Content on third-party platforms not funded, developed, or directly controlled by the school
- Live audio or video content
Where older documents are essential to our services, we will endeavour to provide accessible alternatives on request.
What We Are Doing to Improve Accessibility
We are taking the following steps to improve accessibility over time:
- Ensuring new documents are created in accessible formats wherever possible
- Incorporating user feedback to enhance accessibility
- Keeping up to date with evolving accessibility standards and best practices
