Emotional Literacy

Emotional Literacy focuses on helping pupils to identify, understand, express and manage a range of emotions, as well as being able to empathetically respond to the feelings of others. Emotional Literacy lessons aim to provide pupils with skills that they can utilise in everyday life.

Our Emotional Literacy programme runs alongside our PSHE and RSHE programmes (in Key Stage 3: Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9) and is tailored to our pupils to ensure it is both beneficial and appropriate. We endeavour to ensure that our Emotional Literacy programme is inclusive of all pupils, regardless of background, sexuality, race or gender. 

 Emotional Literacy content is delivered alongside age-appropriate stories which link to the specific themes. The themes covered will include information and learning about:

 Year 7:

  • What worry is and how to manage worries.
  • Understanding diversity
  • Understanding what courage is, identifying ways to be courageous
  • Exploring self-esteem and confidence
  • Looking at different family dynamics and acknowledging that all families are different
  • Displacement and what it means

 Year 8:

  • Food groups and the importance of a balanced diet
  • Sleep routines and the importance of healthy sleep
  • Bullying (including cyber bullying) and where to get support
  • Online social media and what information not to share online
  • Grief and where to get support
  • Keeping healthy (including vaccines)

Year 9:

  • Respectful online behaviour (including fake news)
  • Online safety
  • Well-being and self-care
  • How to reframe negative thoughts
  • Transitions (including resilience)
  • Where to get support from
